Västergötland is a fantastic and varied county, which is full of history and wonderful architecture made by talented craftsmen. Göteborg and the beautiful archipelago is one facet but there are many. The proud industrial past with purposeful buildings and the Göta canal are important to the wealth of the area. The huge lakes of Vänern and Vätten, the rich farm land with enormous flat fields and the table top mountains of Hunneberg and Halleberg leave you breathless. On our journey we found wonderful restaurants throughout – in hotels, country clubs, stunning sea and lakeside locations and buildings that had very successfully, had a dramatic change of use. A former tourist office has become a stunning restaurant on the shores of lake Vättern. An icehouse has been converted into a fantastic atmospheric venue. We even found a delightful bookshop in a very pretty small house in the countryside that had a café full of the most tempting cakes you could imagine. The restaurants also share some of their best recipes.
